How to Install Hanging Hardware

If you are like us (perpetually stressed out people who are busy working all the time) you are probably like what the fuck is all of that. There are a lot of picture hanging options. Selecting the best options depends on the weight of the artwork, where you are hanging it (it it a rental?), and what type of surface you're hanging your artwork on. Also it's important to make sure you secure the work especially well if you live in an earthquake prone area like we do.

  • Hanging Brackets are similar to sawtooth hangers— for those of you who may have prior knowledge of framing— these are placed on the corners of the frame, then attached to the nails & hooks.

  • Wire & D-rings are strong, easy to install & adjust hardware for hanging a picture. A good guide for installing Wire & D-Rings (1 to 100 pounds).

    • we personally like this option the least. we only tend to use wire hanging when it's the only option or it's already installed on the back of the work when it comes. You will always be straightening this picture! If you're hanging it in a high traffic area it can be much easier to knock off balance or knock off the wall.

  • Brass Plated Wall Hangers for picture frames up to 75lbs, utility hooks for hanging picture frames with wire or with D-rings.

    • These are cheap and they work great especially when you have to use wire.

  • Knurled Nails for Brass Plated Wall Hangers They are best used with picture hooks which are specially shaped to guide the pin into the wall at the optimum angle. Can be used on their own to hang small pictures. Steel with a knurled brass head.

  • Euro Hangers are what keeps your hanging wire in place. They fasten to the back of the frame, and hanging wire should be strung tight through each side to ensure an even display.

  • French cleat is simply a sturdy beveled support board, to hang heavy items, such as large mirrors, artworks, and cabinets. A good guide for installing a french cleat - (1 to 200 pounds).

    • We have hung some incredibly heavy art this way. Unfortunately because you will have to install the cleat on the back of the work it's not always a great option depending on the type of artwork you're hanging. We had this installed on the back of a sculpture that we knew during the commission process was going to be very heavy. Unfortunately, because you will have to install the cleat on the back of the work it's not always a great option depending on the type of artwork you're hanging.

  • Omni hangers is the most commonly used hanging device on metal frames. It’s can be used on all size pictures and is very strong. installing a Omni hangers - (1 to 100 pounds)

  • Corner Brackets are what keep your metal frame together. As the name suggests, they are on the corners of your frame, and you can simply loosen or tighten to disassemble or assemble the frame.

  • Offset Clips can be used with screws in one or both holes and can be reversed to install items shallower than your picture frame depth. Select a clip with an offset equal to the protrusion of item from the back of your picture frame. Offset clips can be adjusted in size by tapping with a hammer or bending with pliers. Felt pads or bumpers can be used to cushion and adjust the point of contact.have many applications including: Stretched Canvases, Tiles, Stacked Frames, Shadow Box construction, Floater Frames. Offset Clips come in a variety of sizes: 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch.

  • Double Headed Bear Claw, 4 In 1 Screw

  • Drywall claw/OOK 200 Lb. Capacity No Stud Drywall Hanger OOK professional picture hanger is great for areas that don't have a wall stud. Push into drywall and use included hanging nails to hold hanger in place. 200 lb. heavy object hanger, no stud needed. Ideal for 1/2" to 5/8" drywall.

    • We love this thing! We can swear by the OOK as we a hung 100 pound mirror this way it never fell and killed us. We worried about that every time we sat in the chair next to it. Even more gratifying was the fact that two earthquakes happened and it also never came down. This works great when you have something incredibly heavy to hang on very thin drywall. We also added some additional clips to screw down the mirror as much as possible- don't take chances with your life.

  • Ez Canvas Hang Ups slip the EZ Hang Up under the stretcher bar the canvas. EZ Hang Ups are supported by the canvas stretcher frame taking full advantage of the canvases integrity. The zigzag top edge will support the entire weight of the canvas and avoids slips due to its toothy grip of virtually any common nail head. When you are transporting canvases you can easily remove the EZ Hang Up so pictures lie flat. This is only available at Jerry's Artarama.

  • Glazier Points help keep glass in place inside of a picture frame.

    • if you're not attempting to frame the work yourself you probably won't ever use these or need them. For you do it yourselfers, like us you definitely will need them at some point.

  • Minirail systems are the thinnest picture hanging systems. This is a great wall protective option, a lot of museums and galleries use this for a barely visible hanging system. They are often sold as a minirail railkit which should include: the rail in the length of your choice, the required amount of clipscrews, a rail connector, a combicap (a corner connector and two end caps in one) and a drilling template. • Blah blah blah.. We hate this! It was installed on the back of one of our diplomas when it came or we would have never used it. If you do not get those stupid wall clippy things exactly level, that picture will always be hung off balance and look incredibly stupid. It should be easy but it's not..
